Massive Attack's Meltdown
2008-07-15
One festival you wont need your wellies for this summer is the Massive Attack Meltdown festival taking place at London's Southbank. Nine days of concerts, DJ sets, talks, films and visual art all chosen by Massive Attack.
I went up on Saturday night and was hypnotised by the United Visual Artists 'Volume' installation that consists of columns of scrolling light and sound that respond to the onlookers walking amongst them, so no performance is ever the same.
Most of the events are free. Check out the website.

Luella and Tonic Generation
2008-05-15
Tonic Generation say:
'What if your wallet or purse was an instrument of ethical decision-making? Or, to put it another way, what if you could spend your way towards a better world? Not just for you but for every living thing on our planet.'
But Tonic Generation also go one step further - and give you the opportunity to do just that whilst also getting to buy clothing you really genuinely want any way - such as their new great line of T Shirts under the fantastic 'Luella' range.
Luella Bartley (Whose London store has the most eccentric beautiful staff you've ever seen) has designed an exclusive range of four T's that not only are ecologically sourced, ethically produced but the proceeds of which go to help fund shoes for children in Haiti and set up educational programmes against Malaria and HIV for children in Africa.

guilty pleasures
2008-04-25
dolly dearest...while i wish i didn't, i've always liked Made in America. Whats not funny about Ted Danson riding in a car with his best mate the singe as a passenger.
Its a guilty pleasure a bit like Uncle Buck.
The Goonies is different...don't get me started on the Goonies.

PIMP MY MAC

"ColorWare Inc., established in 2000, is an industry leader in altering the color of existing products. ColorWare began with the concept of transforming the ubiquitous beige computer into a custom-colored work of art." http://www.colorwarepc.com/
If you're a show-off or like my flatmate, who painstakingly matches her toenail poilish to her top in winter months when toes are wrapped up in socks all day, you can customise your mac or PSP to your hearts desire.
Or if you dream of a day when you can have such objects you can play and watch the nice colours change, it's quite satisfying.

Dolly gets her knit on
2008-04-17
My favourite things in life are 80s Hair Metal and knitting.
Im making a scarf for Liz. Its the colour of Helmans mustard, Ive dropped loads of stitches, the stitches get stupidly tight then stupidly loose.
If anyone were to ask me how long Ive spent on said woolen marvel, Id have to say:
er... One weird film with Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley (who has been the same age his WHOLE life), 2 episodes of Scrubs, An AWFUL 90s film with Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson and the fabulous 'Strangers With Candy'.
I think I might watch too much Channel 5.
Anyway, get your knit on at 'Prick Your Finger' in East London.
This knitting shop is run by best friends Louise Harries and Rachael Matthews (Harries is a knitwear designer whos worked for Hoxton Boutique and Gucci - so you're in good company).
They run knitting classes, and make knitted replicas of baked bean tins and post pictures on their blog of their friend Stephen sleeping off a hangover in the shop window.

Electric Wood
2008-03-25
I found this yesterday when I was searching for something. The title got me intrigued>>"Wooden Mirror", i thought it would be some kind of projected mirror image on a plane of wood but it actually is lots of cubes that move to follow the person standing in front of this "mirror". When the light hits the changing angles of the wood it creates a pixelated moving picture. Just see, it's better explained in video than my tuesday morning garble.

... and Kate is a Japanese schoolgirl - or at least for the night.
Gin Panic's Tarantino-themed gig at the Black Gardenia was a riot of success. The theme was simple, come dressed as your favourite Tarantino character, the more obscure the better.
We had Gogo from Kill Bill, multiple Mia Wallaces from Pulp Fiction, a Vincent Vega and a pack of Reservoir Dogs.
I picked Patricia Arquette's character from True Romance, but ended up looking a bit more Bette Lynch than Alabama Worley.

Gummy Awards 2008: Great Video Contenders

By opening the polls yesterday to the most important vote of 2008, we understandably set off a firestorm of doubt, unrest, and confusion: Best Video Of The Year? But who remembers all the videos? Well we remember all the videos. That's because we blog. It's understandable that if you don't spend your days resizing YouTube embed codes, you might not remember every video to hit the internet this year. Also it's understandable that if you've been on the internet this year, you've come to think of most "indie"-oriented videos as cheaply constructed, transparently press-cycle-extending promo material. HOWEVER I think you're being a little cynical and depressed about this whole thing, and someone has to win this category, and really at the end of the year there were a few clips worth remembering. To help jog the brains, here's 11 that, while maybe not the best, might remind you of the good times we had together in four-minute intervals in 2008:
Alternate Kanye Cover By Kaws
After all the leaks and Auto-Tunes, Kanye's 808s & Heartbreak is finally out next week (11/24). In the meantime, we have one more tidbit: The Brooklyn artist KAWS created a cover for the iTunes release that offers a variation on the official version: Get literal.
New Eels - "Man Up"

The new Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel film Yes Man features nine Eels songs, including the new track "Man Up," which is currently streaming at MySpace. On top of Eels -- E's other tracks are all previously released "classics" -- there are four songs by Munchausen By Proxy, Deschanel's Von Iva-helmed band in the flick (and now on the soundtrack).
The Yes Man soundtrack is out 12/9 via Lakeshore.

Loopy Luella Love
There's always been something really endearing about Luella. In the way that when Marc Jacobs thinks up a new gimmicky theme each season he goes all out with it and does the whole shebang without really any consequence or care...

The internet may have provided the blog with most of the research content but if I can't find something through the wonderful world of the interweb, then I will make damn sure I try and come across it in real...

Shala Esquire Mixtape on FMCS
